Create a Goal – Make it Work

do goals work

Has there ever been a time when you decided to write down your goals and then never looked at them again?

Why do you think that is? Beside the fact that only 50% of the world are motivated by goals, most people are simply too lazy, careless, or just forget.
The only way that goals can work are by doing one thing: TELL EVERYONE
Tell everyone you can possibly think of everywhere you go. The more people that know what your looking to accomplish, the more people that will indirectly hold you accountable. The more people that hold you accountable, the less chances you’ll forget about your goals.  Simple and true. You must still do the basics:

  • Choose a goal that has true meaning and importance to you
  • Write your goals as defined and specific as possible
  • Have it in a place you’ll be able to see it every day. Place a reminder in your calendar to change the location every 3-4 weeks because having in the same place after a while will make the visual of your goals obsolete.
  • START RIGHT NOW, not on Monday and definitely NOT ON January 1st!!!

As an individual who has had experience in career development, giving workshops on how to write resumes and cover letters, writing resumes for myself and others in various styles, and editing college students’ resumes, I am familiar with and understand, first-hand, your bulleted identifiers regarding the creation of goals.
There is just one thing that I would like to add to your 4th bullet of starting right now with creating goals: one must also write down and reflect on all the ways that she or he will achieve the goal(s), and actively read and pursue those ways, daily.
Additionally, it is also good to write down a list of no more than 5 goals, to start, and work toward achieving those. One goal is too few, and more than 5 may be too much since it may dillute one’s conscious actions toward genuinely achieving them.
    Happy goal-pursuing, everyone!

Great advice, you should definitely review your goals daily. Also, because your mind has a tendency to forget about things when they are in 1 place too long. This is called: *Novelty Value* Ex: Have you ever put a note on your monitor or picture on a wall and then just completely never focus on it again? This means that there was a novelty value, but wore off, and you don’t focus on it anymore.
So put a reminder on your outbox or phone to move your goals to a new spot every month. 🙂

One very interesting aspect of setting goals is that even if you write them down and put them away, you will be surprised that you will end up achieving most, if not all, of them. I don’t know how it happens, but it does… most of the time, 🙂

Nice article on goals! Everyone should know what their goals are! Reality is we all have them, not just 50%… but I'd wager to say it's the 50% (or much more) who simply don't know what their goals are!

I also have a blog where I talk about goals and this sort of stuff. It's fascinating stuff, I'm telling you!
